But far less attention is paid to the people expected to use this technology every day. A new Chambers Talent Research report shifts the focus inward, examining how associates\u00a0actually experience\u00a0AI in practice \u2013 and what that reveals about\u00a0the state of legal\u00a0AI\u00a0adoption.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing on large-scale associate research, the findings challenge some common assumptions about what it means to be \u201cahead\u201d on AI and point to a more human, and more cultural, explanation for why some\u00a0top US law\u00a0firms are pulling ahead while others stall.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>The scale of AI activity across the market is&nbsp;substantial. Between August 2025 and January 2026, Chambers surveyed over 8,000 associates across more than 100 US law firms, with a focused analysis on early\u2011career associates at 64 leading firms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a headline level, associates report&nbsp;fairly positive&nbsp;sentiment. On average, firms score 5.5 out of 7 for investment in AI training and 5.4 out of 7 for senior lawyers embracing AI in practice. These figures suggest that AI is visible and actively promoted across much of the market.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But confidence \u2013 the measure that most directly reflects everyday use \u2013 tells a more tentative story.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>When associates rate their personal confidence using AI tools, the market average sits at 5 out of 7, below both training and leadership measures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the report\u2019s central charts illustrates this clearly, showing the three measures clustered closely together \u2013 but with confidence consistently at the bottom.
